| John Falter. Crescent
City, California. n.d. (circa 1955).Oil on
canvas, approximately 19-3/4” x 21-3/4”, in period frame,
24-1/2” x 26-3/4” overall. Signed by the artist lower left.
The painting depicts a scene from the corner of 2nd and H Streets in
Crescent City, and features most prominently the Bank of America
building. Further to the left in the painting is the old “Surf
Hotel”, the only structure in that area which survived the
tidal wave of 1964. The Bank of America has rebuilt on the same location,
though route 101 has been diverted several blocks over.
Falter (1910-1982) was a noted illustrator for the Saturday Evening
Post, producing over 200 of the magazine’s covers. He also painted
a notable series of street scenes in cities across the United States
and this work is likely one of those.
It has a distinguished provenance being from the estate of Louis Lundborg,
Chairman of the Board of the Bank of America and noted art collector.
