“Phoebe Apperson Hearst was born on the third day of December, 1842, in an old-fashioned American farm in the old-fashioned State of Missouri. She died in a magnificent Spanish hacienda in California, surrounded with every exotic luxury that the brain of man could conceive, or the heart of woman desire”.William Randolph Hearst commissioned the reknowned printer John Henry Nash to create this lavishly produced eulogy to his mother; a companion volume celebrated his father. Mrs. Hearst was a social leader in early San Francisco and supported many charitites.
