West Point Tic-Tacs. A Collection of Military Verse Together with the Special Poem "Cadet Grey," by Bret Harte

HARTE, Francis Bret.
New York: Homer Lee & Co., 1878. Illustrated by Thomas Nast and other artists.
First edition. 138pp, 14 blank leaves for autographs (unused), one advertisement leaf. Very scarce, especially in this nice condition.

Custom chemise and half morocco over gray cloth slipcase (fine_. Spine edges and corners a little rubbed, cloth slightly dust soiled, front hinge a little weak, internally fine.

Harte's elaborate poem was modeled after Lord Byron's Childe Harold. Cadet Grey contains the first song Harte ever composed, and was the featured work (occupying pages 9 to 43) of this anthology of military verse. Warren Howell (noted bookseller in San Francisco), cataloguing this title in 1979, considered the work "very rare." BAL notes the poem "is rumored to exist in broadside form.". [BAL 7299 locates 3 copies. Howell 50:1085].
